Fresh Market & Co
Good produce, grown close, picked right

Every project has a summit.

Fresh Market & Co sources fruit and vegetables directly from growers within a day's drive, so what arrives on our shelves was still in the ground or on the vine two days ago. We keep it simple: good produce, honest prices, and a shop that smells like it should.

About

Clara Whitfield started Fresh Market & Co in the autumn of 2017 after eight years working in restaurant kitchens, the last four as a head chef at a small bistro in the city. She kept noticing the same problem: the produce arriving from the big distributors was fine, technically,…

Why people keep coming back

Direct from growers

We buy from around 14 farms and market gardens. Most are within 80 miles. We know the names of the people who grew your carrots.

Delivered twice a week

Stock arrives Tuesday and Friday mornings. If you come in on a Wednesday, you are eating Tuesday's delivery. That is as fresh as a shop gets.

No pre-packed bags

You pick the quantity. One courgette or six, it is up to you. We weigh it, you pay for exactly what you take home.

How to Store Summer Vegetables So They Last

Most vegetables do not want to be in the fridge. That is the single most useful thing we tell people at the till, and it surprises a lot of customers who have been refrigerating their tomatoes for years. Different vegetables want different conditions, and once you know the basics, you waste a lot less.

What Actually Makes Heritage Tomatoes Different

Heritage tomatoes get a lot of attention for how they look, and the colours are genuinely striking. But the reason we stock them is not the appearance. It is that they were bred for flavour rather than shelf life, and once you understand that distinction, the price difference starts to make sense.

How to Build a Summer Salad That Actually Works

A good salad in summer is mostly about the produce. If the tomatoes are ripe and the leaves are fresh, you do not need much else. But there are a few structural things that make the difference between a salad that holds together and one that goes soggy before you finish it.

The person

"Clara Whitfield trained in professional kitchens from the age of 19, spending eight years cooking before she opened Fresh Market & Co in 2017. Her last role before the shop was head chef at Larder Bistro, where she started driving out to farms on her days off because the distributor produce was not good enough. She opened the shop on a fold-up table with borrowed scales and has been buying direct ever since. She visits farms in person when she needs to see what is actually growing, and she reads seed catalogues in the evenings the way other people read novels."
