Pre-packed produce is convenient, and we understand why people buy it. But there are real, practical reasons why loose produce is better for most people most of the time, and they go beyond the obvious packaging argument.

You buy what you actually need

A pre-packed bag of courgettes contains four courgettes. If you need two, you either use all four or let two go soft at the back of the fridge. Buying loose means you take exactly what you will use. Over a week, that adds up to less waste and, usually, less money spent. We weigh everything in front of you, so there are no surprises.

You can see what you are buying

Pre-packed produce is often arranged so the best-looking pieces face outward. With loose produce, you pick each piece yourself. You can check for soft spots, choose the size that suits what you are cooking, and avoid anything that does not look right. That is not possible with a sealed bag.

Loose produce is often fresher

Pre-packed produce typically goes through an additional handling and packaging step, which adds time between harvest and shelf. Loose produce, particularly from a shop that buys direct and restocks twice a week, has usually had fewer hands on it and less time in transit. It is a small difference but it compounds over the course of a week.

It changes how you cook

When you buy loose, you tend to buy a wider variety of things in smaller quantities. That naturally leads to cooking more seasonally and more flexibly. Instead of planning a week of meals and buying the ingredients, you see what looks good and build meals around that. Most people who switch to loose produce tell us their cooking gets more varied within a few weeks.

We have never sold pre-packed produce and we do not plan to. Come in, take your time, and pick what you actually want.
